Lol what happened at the STB show, it sounds interesting!!

I would also advise getting an instructor to work with you and the horse. I live in QLD so didn't see the STB show and can't comment on the horse or your riding skills but going off what you've said that's what I'd be doing. Or better yet - is there a more suitable horse that you could be using i.e. one that is a bit older and a bit more educated? I don't think you've allowed enough time to prepare yourself or the horse for this sort of comp, if the horse has no trust in you and you have had problems handling him in the past then you could have big problems trying to get him over jumps and around a course...

Even the most experienced of riders need guidance sometimes and there is no shame in gaining wisdom from someone more experienced than yourself

well its a good way to get peoples backs up, scare them away from getting advice/help on here, and doesnt acheive anything towards the pairs education.

Oh s**t.

Ok I've changed my mind...if this is true then maybe this horse should have some professional training before you take him anywhere, or even ride him again for that matter.

Sorry but you could have been killed, not to mention the poor horse. I have seen many horses rear but few flip over backwards - unless the horse is completely NASTY and VICIOUS, this is usually a last resort of a terrified horse that doesn't know what else to do....be careful how you are handling him.

Yeah that's what I meant sorry - should have phrased it better. I meant that some horses will backflip on a rider as an agressive, dominant action in order to hurt/kill the rider. I wasn't implying this horse was vicious, I was trying to say that UNLESS he is vicious, this is usually a last resort.

And I haven't seen the pics but I would assume it is because he did not know what the hell was going on lol.

Very lucky that no one was hurt.

thats what everyone has been saying heif, the horse was scared and confused... the rider/handler has said ' a horse with a temper'... maybe they need to learn most things is NOT the horses fualt, but the rider/handler!

YUP. And this isn't aimed at the OP at all but everyone should look at yourself FIRST and your horse SECOND

Not weighing in on the debate but I think it is advisable that anyone teaching a horse to jump for the first time (theirs and the horses) should do it with a good instructor. You never get to re-do those early exeriences with your horse so take time and do it right.

agree TBPA. I know very little about jumping so never trained over jumps without an instructor around!
