Default Ideas's on standing still

Helllo people

I am having trouble getting my boy to stand still for mount and dismount. I have tried having him chest up to a bar and also making him move off repeatdly under my steam untill he decides to stand still, have also spent several hours hopping around with one foot in the stirrup praising him when he finally stands.

Any new ideas would be very much appreciated as one rein stop will not hold him either.11yr STB back in work under saddle for a month so far.

Cheers

Hi Crafty,
Possibly you arent putting ehough pressure on him when he wont stand still, by this i mean as soon as he goes to move away (like even one step as you make the first move to get on) you need to send him (holding the rein in your left hand pointing the direction your want him to go and using your right hand to encourage him forward) and by sending him i mean SEND him... ask him to really move, be that in walk or trot, and really mean it your body language has to say you are calm and confident but his behaviour is NOT what you want. Then bring him to a stand still and start again. If he honestly is not responding to this then i would take his head to his hindquaters as fast as you can the second he goes to move, thus shutting down his hindquarters and showing him that you have complete control over he feet.

P.S i found ALOT of success with this with my 16.2 T/B straight off the track and within a very short time he was standing stock still for mounting and dismounting and is very calm about it as he knows what i want. I hope i explained it ok.... ??

If you have someone who is experienced with Hobbles, try knee hobbling him while you get on. Just make sure you get your horse used to having them on before you try correct the problem with them.

the biggest thing i found was making sure that you spent a good couple of minutes standing still once you are in the saddle. you need to reinforce that standing is good! don't move off the minute you are up and in the saddle.

Standing still being the problem once I am on he still moves off and completely ignores the bit grrr, I would prefer not to put a stronger bit in his mouth as he was iron mouth before he went out on holidays. I will try a noseband on him this arvo and sending him RIGHT away lol as Jonsie suggests.
Making them stand once on has worked for me with other horses Just a shame I cant get him to do it.

Will pass on the hobbles thanks Ozzie I think he would freak at this.

I'm glad you use a mouting gadget to Smash. I use a drum as I dont want to pull on his back. Mind you I am slightly larger then you lol.

So the pressure is only the rein? I had thought maybe me getting on being heavy was creating pressure on him. As soon as my but hits the saddle I make sure I am relaxed and through the legs too.

Ben will now come when I call and walk to be beside me god damnit I need to hijack a video camera

oh gosh, i cant get on without a mounting gadget crafty LOL LOL LOL
now its not just the reins that you release, it is any pressure that YOU APPLY.
in those steps i sent you, you should notice that you are REMOVING pressure that YOU APPLY.
it is a build up, like stepping stones.
most likely i am not making much sense LOL LOL LOL but i do hope you understand what i mean.

he he he PSO, sssshhhhh, if he hears you, he will be trying to do that next LOL LOL LOL
