In my opinion I wouldn't buy a cold backed horse. Why bother? Horses are ment to be enjoyable and you shouldn't have to worry each time you get on the horse if it has been lunged enough of walked around enough.

I know a mare who is 14 years old who has been like that all her life, from day one of having a saddle on her.
She is such a smart horse on cattle, that an experienced person still rides her.
Everytime the saddle is on she has to be lunged in a small circle untill she stops pig rooting. Than she is fine to get on and go straight away.

Hi all- thanks for you opinions and comments, I am not ignoring you, just that he is for sale and so I don't want to expand at this stage.
As Brew has put it is a subjective topic and hence left my original post vague looking for all info comments. PS Brew I wasn't offended really just had to giggle at your directness

As jonty says we will see more on the weekend but I will definately take all opinions on board and progress carefully...

thanks!

lol true, if you can dish something out you should be able to take it as you give it...we all need to be opened minded and still not take things personally when even they may be directed intentionally personal...
i didnt even know there was a term as cold back..lol been riding my whole life...i personally would take the horse on trial if he is a freebe then there shouldnt be any trouble with you doing that...perhaps get a vet check him out...whats $150 to find out if a horse has a problem...like someone else said it could be as simple as girthyness and then again it could be something that will cause this horse to get worse...try him bareback and see if he is any different to ride or start with...? let us know what you end up doing?

Occasionally people get bargains.........

If a horse has "issues" why bother..........would you buy a car with bad breaks? or no doors
if you are inexperienced and not wanting to broaden your horizon or even excepting help from other people then yeh go for a more expensive horse...or you could help yourself by helping a horse at the same time making your experience that much more and knowledgable...i personally love these types of horses that kick bite windsuck etc (if of course is not a medical thing) it is so rewarding and refreshing to have a horse really tell you the truth about yourself...alot of people just dont want to know a horse with a problem and yet they want a "woken" horse that will put up with thier problems...how about seeing what it is like with the shoe on the other foot? TRIAL....it doesnt cost a thing and you may even be surprised what you find....

If you really like the horse have a vet check done or a trial and have a sports massage done on the horse to see if there is any underlying issue with spinal, muscular or nerves being out of sort. Cold backed horses do need extra warm up time but they can be worked out of it or re-introduced to the saddle.

I am only talking from experience where I thought a horse was being naughty where it was actually in pain.

If it is ongoing and untreatable being re-educated, then the horse might not be worth perservering with.

Oh for crikey sake can we leave out the twaddle.
How can someone who is inexperienced with horses HELP themself?
How can they HELP a horse if they have no idea how to do that?
How can they keep themself safe around a horse that is potentially one that bucks or rears because its "cold backed"?

"Woken" horse.........?
What the heck is a "woken" horse?

More-over what is a "sleeping" horse?

OK:

When you get offered a cold backed horse you should ask it to wear your shoes. When it dances to your tune then you will be refreshed and rewarded.
It will learn to be you and you will learn to be it. In the mind of the horse you will be shoeless and it will be woken up. It will wear the shoes and the pants.
You will be naked while it is kicking biting and windsucking. The horse will tell you the truth about yourself by kicking you in the head, biting your hand off and sucking on your butt.
