Default Rearing on the lunge????

First of all I want to make this clear, Cheeky has never reared under saddle, she does not put me in danger and I am not selling her on.

Now that I've said that I'll continue
My 13.3hh QH x Appy Cheeky is an absolute gem to lunge in the roundyard she turns when you point the other way, stops when she's told, moves faster or slower when asked and is just great but....

when lunged on a lunge line it's a different story she'll be trotting steadily along as slow as she possible can and all of a sudden she explodes and bounces throws her head and rears. Depending on her mood she'll do a little one or big one and one or two or every time she comes round. she'll then touch down look at me innocently and start to walk in at this I just point where i want her to go say NO firmly and keep her going.

I think it could be just when she's had enough and thats her way of letting me know but is there a way I can solve this by myslef?

Also she never puts me in danger because the rears at the end of the line and only pulls me slightly off balance before she stops. Never in close where I can get hurt.

Perhaps she is telling you that she is uncomfortable. Monty Roberts did a demonstration on single line lunging the other weekend when he was here and how much stress it puts on the horse's body and the damage it could do.

Perhaps your horse is saying "Ouch!"

i would be thinking along the same lines merry legs.
R&S is there anyway you could video her?
video her lunging off the lunge and then video her on the lunge?
it is a bit hard to say what is going on, other than guessing she may be a bit sore somewhere.
cheers

My horse is the opposite... Hes a turd with no lunge line, he turns and bolts the other way over and over but with the line hes fine.

Is there any reason why you have to use the lunge line?

What are your reasons for lunging? Do you need to lunge?

Okay to answer everyones Qs

Merrylegs and smash- she lunges fine in an arena though so could she still be in pain?

Megz86- yer, I don't have a roundyard at home

3ponies- Exercise. she's fat and parents always say they're gonna be home but not always are after school and I can't ride with no one home also on w/e every fortnight I stay at dads for work and they all go to motorcross so thats the only work I can do with her.

I just wondered, because if you weren't lunging for a reason I wouldn't bother with it anymore A fat pony and not being able to ride make for a good reason

hmm i have a similar problem... not a full rear more like a little lunge forward and a flick of the head. The situation has MUCH improved over the past few weeks and i think its mainly a discipline thing with my pony, he is VERY cheeky and only does it once after he has been working a bit and i think its his way of saying Ok enough now cant we just cuddle? He is a VERY responsive pony so gets the message quickly that its work time and doesnt try again.... maybe your horse is thinking the same thing? Or he could be getting a bit tight towards the end and just wants to stop? Lunging is very strenuous work on the horse

Possibly. How small is the round yard? The smaller the yard the harder it is for a horse (specially larger horses) to work in there... if you lunge her on a larger circle (easier, more comfortable) in the arena than she would get in the round yard it may be discomfort. When on a single lunge-line the horse's body twists with the head and tail out but free-lunging they don't really do that.

Otherwise it may be an association... she's learned to associate the round yard with misbehaving for some reason with somebody, ie learned to get away with it.

I am not sure I can offer solutions because I can't actually see her doing it so can't pick up any signals off her.
