Question jumper needed expert help

ok guys i need ur help =]

i have the most perfect jumper untill we hit heights of 1.20 or more !!!!
then he does this really weird canter thing before the jump....
he works really round, and perfect stride...
the about 2 to 3 strides before the jump he puts his head up speeds up and shortens his canter stride.

at shows hes good and fine but at home hes more confident and wild !!!!!
its ok with the small jumps cos its easy to handle but the big jumps well its just dangerous!!!!!!

I think you probably need to go to a top quality jump instructor.

Hi,

I had a gelding a few years ago that started doing the same thing once he hit 1.3m. I found with him the more i fought him the worse it got so i trusted him to be honest and jump and just gave him his head which seemed to help and i soon was able to regain control. Not long after he was doing 1.5m confidently and didnt feel he had to quicken stride to cover. I would advise taking him/her to an instructor and working on her in a one on one enviroment. The best way to solve things i find is just trial and error. Good luck, hope its worked out soon.

My horse does the same thing and rushes a couple of strides before the jump i put poles in front of the jump to slow her down and make her listen to me.

It sounds like he is rushing just before the jump - perhaps getting a bit excited etc, or you may be tensing up as it is a higher jump then usual.

Either way, I'd try laying out some poles before the jump to set out his stride.
And a few lessons with an experienced instructor would help sort out the best way to go.
Also make sure you're not coming forward too early before the jump.

Yep I am with TBPA, sounds like you need a good jump instructor. Also make sure you do lots of grid work.

Default jumping problem

i would try to let his head go a bit more and more half halts, 120 is obviously a hieght he needs to put his head up to see clearly and that is why i understand he is rushing because all of a sudden when he puts his head up to face the jump he sees the jump more clearly and panics so therefore he rushes into the jump to clear it. dont get all worked up in having him rounded as such just make sure he is in your outside rein correctly so you can line him up properly and KEEP YOUR LEG ON! lots o half halts before the jump and relax let him enjoy it. poles are a good way to remind you to half halt and come in straight to a jump too.

hope i can help

hey guys
i had a lesson with the master of showjumping les bunnings today
fantastic got up to 1.30 and worked out everything..
everything everyone said helped so much aye
the reason he was puttin his head up was pretty much so he wasn happy with my chosen speed so if i quicken him up to a good pace he os confident with and is safe for me he clears them sooooo good and im soooo happy with that we did the grids the circles and now i no what to do
can wait for the wanneroo jumping day to truly put my skills into practice
i must say with out the view into my horses eyes from the stockie girls i couldn of done it thanks all
