Thumbs down Pain in the butt mare

one of my mums non horsey friends bought a horse and me being the generous idiot that i am, offered to let her keep it with my horse at my agistment paddock. shes a 7yo OTT TB mare and in the few weeks shes been in my paddock, shes become really attached to Red. I HATE CO- DEPENDENT HORSES!!!!
Red is a loner and prefers ppl to other horses so hes no problem, but when i take him out of the paddock every night to rug him, i have to stand him close to the fence or she tries to get out.
im moving this weekend and taking Red with me, but i know that when i take him out and put him on the float, the pain in the butt mare will go thru the fence and most likely seriously hurt herself
how am i going to get around this problem??
i was gonna ask the owner to come and handle the mare until ive taken Red away, but she hasnt handled a horse in 30 years, let alone an OTTTB, and im worried that shell get hurt. and she doesnt want anyone else to touch her horse. ARRGGHH!!!! any ideas stockis???

I have had the same issue with my horses!
I had my mare and pony in a paddock and everytime i took one away the other would freak! I ended up not being able to do anything with my pony because it would leave me mare and she would either go through the fences or jump over them!! I am sorry you have had to go through this!
As for suggestions im not much help, I would say your best bet would be to speak to the owner.... Are there other horses other than your horse there for her?

Good luck with it

Oh man it is very frustrating isn't it!!
My only suggestion would be to use the time that you have left there to seperate them in the paddock (e.g put electric tape right down the middle to they have half and half and then move him one paddock away etc) then atleast she wont freak out too much to start with! I have found that if they atleast have their own paddock they aren't AS dependant... unfortunately i doubt anything will help until your horse is gone! Good luck!

ummm why has a non horsey person bought an OTTB Lol not that that is any of my business

I too dislike horses that get separation anxiety. Will this mare be the only horse in the paddock? If she is then I would suggest that the owners move her to a spelling paddock where she can interact with other horses. If she is with other horses then I would be inclined to have someone there to keep an eye on her for half an hour after you have taken Red away. Sometimes the other horse actually leaving the property settles these dependant horses down quicker than if the other horse can be seen or heard.

Good luck

I also think it should be the owners responsibility to control the horse when you leave - this mare has become your problem and shouldn't have. If she cant control her, then she should find someone who can..
I think you need to tell her to organise something because you shouldnt have to stress about it, and your horse/you shouldnt be put in a situation.
Seraration Anxiety is a tricky one!! Good luck with it!

yes deschuur, i totally agree that a non horsey person shouldnt have an OTT, however, shes a very headstrong person, and thinks she knows more than she does, so all i can do is give her advice and hope some of it sinks in.

and be there with 000 ready to dial on my mobile the first time she rides her

and ill also be ready to say I TOLD U SO to her

Seperating them until you go is a must so then she might befriend another horse. I personally would tell her when exactly your going and let her know that there will be a risk of her horse injuring its self. Then its up to her to take responsibility for a horse she probably can't control. If she doesn't turn up just go the mare probably will run around like an idiot for a little while but will soon realise there are other horses. In short its not your problem and by letting her know when your going and what can happen its out of your hands. Good luck and I really hope the mare settles.

Good on you for willing to give her advice Hope she takes the advice on board

Don't make this mare your problem. If there are other horses in the paddock with her then just load Red and go. She will perform a bit but should settle. Let her owners know what time you are going to be down there and advise them that you feel it would be best if they are down there to attend to their mare.

I have a mare with separation anxiety, she has attached herself to Mysty who we take to shows every now and then. I just load and go, Paris performs for a while - she is a fence walker, but soon settles
