Default Rearing

What are some tips for when a horse rears?

I know to lean forward, loosen reins and hold around the neck, and also if you can feel them about to rear to try and ride them through it, but what else can you do?

Im pretty sure that one of my boys reared today out of frustration and i really want to nip it in the bud before it does become a problem.

If you feel it coming, try disengaging him before before it happens.
Either take him into a one rein stop or perhaps just flex him deep to the inside.
Basically, just give him a job to do

I believe, a one rein stop is where you drop one rein and using the other rein flex the horse to your knee.. basically the horses nose should nearly touch your knee.
This disengages the hindquarters so the horse can't buck or rear.

Well that's what i was taught hehe.

Most importantly I would have to say don't let him win the battle. If he rears makes him work -make him go forward or circle him, like you said you were doing.

If you were to hop off he would think he has won the fight and then try it again next time to get out of working so make sure he understands rearing won't achieve anything!

I think you handled the situation well!

ahhh then thats good that eddy can do that and actually stops what he is doing. lol like i said i didnt even realise it was a rear until i looked at his forelegs. i basically tapped him on the neck said oi, and rode him forward. so one rein stop him if he goes to do it again or ride him into work. cool.

ok so what if the horse can trot/canter with its nose near your knee?

i wouldnt use the one rein stop when he is in the air, runs the risk of pulling him over himself. I would try to get him going foward as much as you could, even if it meant giving him a tap on his butt with your hand.

i had him in the corner of an arena and was trying to teach him to rein back. i put him in the corner because every other time i was teaching him he would back one stride and then side step out of it.

All his gear is fitted correctly, the only addition is a lip strap but he has worn one of them before. I wasnt hanging off his mouth, i was about 5-8cm from the rein buckle, and was asking for the rein back and then releasing. I wasnt hammering into his sides.

Hes been ridden pretty much every day this week for at least 15-20mins, yesterday was a half hour ride, pretty much all in walk doing stuff hes been doing all week apart from the being put in the corner to rein back. Before and after the rear too he was calm, steady and having a ball. So the only thing i can see it being is frustration. But i have decided im going to do some ground work training with him and see if i can teach the rein back there. Maybe be trying to get him to rein back i told him to rear, i dont know, so yeah teach him from the ground, then ill have someone holding a leadline when i attempt it next.

what type of bit are you using? if you have a bit that puts poll pressure on it can encourage them to rear... good luck
