Have you done rein back on the ground first? Always do this kinda stuff on the ground with a halter, then bridle, then ridden Much easier for the horse to understand ..

Sounds like he just got a bit confused. Jed does that (if he's frustrated and is away from Hon does a small bunny hop and he's over it) if he doesn't quite get it ..

good luck!

im using an eggbutt snaffle. i did teach him to rein back in a halter from the ground and i regularly make him do it on the ground when im leading him.

FORWARD, get them going forward, then they wont be able to rear, but make sure you find out what caused him to rear, before you think hes just being naughty.

Forward is the key when a horse is rearing because it is a naughty so an so. However this horse sound rather confused, I would re-access whether this horse is actually ready to be training rein-back. Rein back in theory is an easy movement to train however it goes against the natural instinct of a horse therefore you must have a high level of subbmission and acceptance from your horse before training this movement otherwise you end up with a horse saying 'you want me to do what!! FO'. There is a reason why rein back doesn't appear till elementry (or is it medium I can't remember) so is this horse well established at Novice?(leg yeild, extensions, sitting trot, just about counter canter) if not I would leave rein back alone you are asking for trouble by all means keep training it on the gound but wait till your horse is ready to do it under saddle.

I had this problem with my extremely quiet stockhorse gelding. he is the horse I use for my mum and OH to ride so I need him to be dead quiet. He started it when I'd take him out by himself and he'd get to a certain point and want to turn around, i wouldn't let him and he'd rear. anyway it got worse and worse everytime I passed the same spot. I tired to ride him forward, but the horse just keep doing mini rears till it gave up.

anyway I fixed it one day. when the horse goes to rear you hit them on the top of the neck, just down from their poll. I just did this with my hand but pretty firm. You have to get them while they are going up, not once they are going down so it can be hard. but if you're ready for it then do it. This teaches the horse that rearing is uncomfortable and they don't do it. It might take more than once, but my boy has not done it in the 12months since.

As John O'leary says many horses have been fixed with the sunday times! what a legend he is

Yep, reinback is very dangerous unless the horse is educated well enough in all forward movements. Seems over-cautious I know but if he didn't understand, it's only natural he would go up. Valdez is better at explaining this sort of thing than I am.

Check out John O'Leary's video on one rein stops. VERY worthwhile watching. horseproblems.com.au - Something every rider should know and practice regularly. Your horse needs to know what it means and to practice it regularly for it to be effective.

ah yes that was the other thing I was going to say, obviously the horse is either confused or uncomfortable. so you have to rule out all possiblities. perhaps you could get the horse flexing down (towards their chest) first to let them think that they can go down when the reins are pulled rather than up????? don't know but that's what I tried on my boy and seemed to work.

almost saw the light bulb go on like 'ahh I can put my head down and then start backing up'
