my mare is a STB, and shes quite hot. so i dont really need to rug her as of yet. shes not getting a winter rug in winter, just a fleece if shes in her stable, and a rainsheet for in the paddock. until i move her into another paddock, she is not getting any rugs, as she walks under trees and tears them *pauses for a moment to finish sewing fleece rug* shes got hair missing all over her body but when i move her into a nicer paddock, then she'll have rugs on

Both of mine are naked and paddocked 24/7. I'm in Darling Downs with the howling easterlies and neither seem to have minded.

rahni gets a cotton sheet at night time, will be moving into just a rainsheet soon enough.
when we go to a show, he'll get his cotton show set and that's it.
rocky is old(er) so he is getting a cotton sheet on at night, and during the day as rahni seems to get very hungry and turns to cannibalism.
he'll start getting his rain sheet on at night, and a cotton sheet during the day soon enough.
gracie is getting her cotton sheet on during the nights, but she isn't going to be getting any rugs on apart from a cotton sheet and a rain sheet through the winter, so there is no point getting her so adjusted to rugs.
she's a highland pony, and a baby.
she can do what she is meant to do, grow a yak coat, and learn how to toughen up.
i don't beleive in over rugging.

It is the shortening hours of daylight NOT the cold nights that triggers the onset of the winter woollies. All you do by rugging is control the length and thickness of the coat to some degree.

My two stallions usually have a cotton or a thermo on at night right through summer whenever / if the temp dips below 16/17 because they have very fine coats and are yarded so can't get out of the wind if it is blowing into their sheds (you reckon the easterlies are bad in Armadale - you should experience them in Muchea !!). The mare that is being shown also gets a cotton on at the same time, even though she is out in the paddock.

Everyone had proper winter rugs on for a couple of nights last week though when the temps dropped to around about 10. Now they're all naked again ATM although next week I see the overnight temps are forecast to drop back down again.

None for us up here its still 28 degrees at night but they are getting their winter wollies which means I will be clipping in the coming weeks as they get too hot during the day.

My big Pallie is getting darker by the day as his coat comes through, my welsh A seems to be staying the same colour.

Sunny is in his cotton sheet for now. I have popped his fleece on overnight occasionally when I've been there in the evenings but only if I have spoken to the stable hand that is working the next morning so I am guaranteed it will be taken off the next morning. I'd rather he be a bit chilly then overheat.

As it gets cooler the fleece will go on more often, and then when he is clipped we'll be back into the annoying millions of rugs. Ugh. I'm dreading that!
