Default Ted foundered

Ted went slightly lame last week and was puffy on his forelegs, I hosed them everyday and the puffiness/heat went down over the weekend and it was starting to look alot better. When I went to feed him yesterday he was walking terribly and seemed quite unhappy.

Vet came out this afternoon and sure as anything he has foundered Only mildly though.

Before anyone jumps and accuses the fact he is barefoot, the vet confirmed himself that it has nothing to do with that and is purely the change of diet and pasture after he has come back from spell.

It is a very mild case, but is founder none the less.

Anyone who thinks they are safe because they have a TB, think again LOL

Now I can breathe 1 big gigantic sigh of relief because I've been holding my breath all morning and it's probably no good for me

The trimmer came and trimmed his feet afterwards and apparantely he is already walking alot better from that.

Poor Teddie bear I have had to work today and jus want to go home now and give him a big gigantic cuddle and a nice tall glass of harden the f**k up princess!!

Now I have to work out how to keep the weight off my big fatty as he will now be prone to it.....

Dont beat yourself up. It happened to a friend of mine and she is very knowledgable......illness can also bring it on. She saw it happening stright away and he was put onto Bran mashes and putting him on a sand surface will help. She also used hard bars as well and her horse is better now but it will always be something you will have to watch. In spring the high oxylates in the grass can also trigger it off. Speedibeet is a good feed to keep weight on and is ok'ed by the laminitis foundation. I s he rocking back?

Has your vet given you a feed plan and recovery plan?

I am not surprised......my big fella who is also TB foundered and is barefoot, doing good for the last 4 years without any founder! As I keep in check and feed him carefully!

He's very easy doer and only gets 1kg hard feed plus barley hay daily and there isn't much grass due to the drought season!

He's on speedi beet atm, he is prone to putting on weight wayyy to easily unfortunately so it is going to be an uphill battle from now on

I have been told to change to soaked wheaten chaff instead of oaten, now I just have to find it lol, might put him on Meadow hay also...

If it's not 1 thing it's another bloody fickle creatures

Ahhhh to have a non "special needs" horse.....

I sometimes feel the poor doers are easier to manage than the great doers! It can be such a fine line with these horses................

That is bad news about Ted! Has he been x-rayed?

no X-rays, the vet (who's opinion and experience I trust and is a very straight shooter) has confirmed that it is only a very mild case and no need to x-ray him.

If the vet had advised that he must be x-rayed I would have definitely done it, money was no issue there.

too right Caroline, how can you possibly ensure that your good doer gets everything they need for their size/workload without putting on the weight, it's near on impossible!!! Once he is better I will definitely be talking to a nutritionist. It's just not worth the risk with Special Ted

If it is only a mild case how did the vet diagnose without xrays? I didn't think it was possible. Off to Google now...
