*sigh* cant a girl just read without having to think so hard....

I read this thread because I've just moved my 2 horses off of 5+acres into a jenny craig yard. No signs of founder, just sudden obesity & neck beginning to harden .

Bit of an update on Ted: He is doing well, feeling sore and sorry for himself but seems alot more comfortable, he's now off the jenny craig yard and back into the normal paddock as he has been confined for more than the vet recommended, I'm going to get him a muzzle to stop him indulging on the grass too much and will have his boots with pads on during the day to make him more comfortable. His last day of Bute was yesterday He is now on Meadow Hay which he loves and I'm starting to replace his chaff little by little with soaked chaff, along with his speedi beet and vit/min supplement. He will be moved to our property in Gidge in the next 2-3 weeks and the feed there is alot poorer than where he currently is, so that will help with his situation also.

I don't like the idea of keeping him on an anti biotic, I am not a supporter of anti biotics in any case, I only go on them if I absolutely have NO choice, which of course would be the same with Ted in any case. If the vet had thought he needed them he would've said.

Overall I'm pretty happy with his progress, but just REALLY want to get back in the saddle!!!

Hi B&T, did the vet not think it would be wise to wait until his symptoms had resolved? It also might be best to wait to see how he is when he is bute free as that will give you a better indication of his pain level??

I just want to say that there is a lot of misunderstanding about antibiotics and their role on this thread. There are many people/animals that are alive today because they are on long term antibiotics! Long term use of antibiotics when their use is INDICATED is OK. It is actually the use of antibiotics regularly, when they are not indicated and only for short courses that actually causes the trouble. I should also point out that the trouble is actually drug resistance!

I am all for correct use of medications but I am against people making statements that lack insight. I would not 100% rule out anything for the safety and health of my horse!

If you are going to make a stance against the use of Founderguard can I also suggest adding garlic, sulphur and colloidal silver to your list because these are things that regularly get taken "long term" by some and also have "antibiotic" potential!

You are right Retro, if the vet advised me that I needed to use anti biotics then by all means I would have, however he said it was not neccesary as Ted is a mild case, so why would I use anti biotics if the vet said not to??

I am all for using anti biotics etc if they are needed, however if they are not required (upon veterinary advice) than I won't use them.

I do realise his pain levels may be more noticeable when the bute is out of his system, but for the past couple of days he has been so uninterested and picking around in his hard feed that he's probably not getting the recommended dosage of bute anyway. He has been very stroppy due to being locked up, and doesn't want to eat his **delicious** speedi beet and soaked chaff lol. So the pain level over the next couple of days won't change too much hopefully, if he doesn't get any better the vet will come out again, I don't hesitate calling the vet with these things.

Another thing to take into account with this horse is that he is a very sensitive boy, he really is a big girl

Does he like the speedibeet if you add hot water so it is a nice warm mash? Ours love it warm

haven't tried that yet, may start trying it out with him...he doesn't mind the speedi beet, he's just not crazy for it, I think it's the wet chaff that has him bothered lol. I don't blame him, I tried a bit of speedi beet and it was so bland
