Default Molasses ???

My daughter and I are presently in the middle of an argument about molasses.

I come from the school of thought that basic is better. Chaff, hay with carrots, apples and brewers yeast and for a treat a piece of licorice.

She believes in chaff, hay, sunflower seeds, bran, equilibrium, supplement for hooves, apples, carrots and her most recent addition is molasses. In most of his feeds just "otherwise its just boring".

We have both noticed he has been very skittish on the ground and getting very "forward" taking off sometimes without warning.

When there is a sudden change in temprament I am a firm believer in looking at the feed first.

Therefore the question is in the end:

What is molasses used for with horses

How often if ever should it be given

How much can be given

How do you add it to their feed.

And lastly has anyone had any ill effects or changes of behaviour on molasses.

hmm why not try cutting out the mollasses and see if he calms down.

our ponies seem to be errr more energetic now they are on pasture and 1kg of hygain senior compared to more chaff, lucerne, coolmax.

I have had really hot thoroughbreds and have had them on and off molasses and have never noticed molasses to make a difference.

What is molasses used for with horses: Increase appetite, encourage them to drink, mix medicines up with...

How often if ever should it be given: Dunno, i dont feed it, my horses dont need it, i see it as i dont want my kids to live of sugary crap, so same with my horses, more so because i have 2 ponies that do founder... they dont need it.

How much can be given: Dunno, lol.

How do you add it to their feed: I know its added straight onto hard feed, or mixed in water or ACV.

And lastly has anyone had any ill effects or changes of behaviour on molasses: Cant say, not used it for about 10yrs.

My horses have a plain (boring maybe?) diet, grain or Studmaster, both chaffs, FFS, vit/min & hay.
They all have great appetites so they dont mind the "bland" tucker, anyway dont wild horses have a bland/plain diet??

I don't see the benefits in feeding molasses on a daily basis...as Kylie said, horses don't need it

Fed in small doses, it's fine but can darken the coat I noticed. never had any problems with making a horse fizzy. I like to feed small, very diluted amounts, to damp there feed as I find having them used to the molasses taste makes it easier to introduce new feeds and tastes, if I change the diet and when going to strange places, molasses in the water provides a familiar taste to stange water ( I have 1 fussy horse who does,'t like scheme water, we only have bore at home).
