Default Crushed lupins and barley

Can anyone tell me if you can feed crushed lupines and barley unsoaked or do they have to be soaked?
Does that make sense hmmmm.

When i use to feed them, i fed soaked but only for about 10 mins as they can be a bit dusty.

I know people feed them dry, just like flaked grain.

Hello,

I feed my horse flaked/crushed barley and you don't have to soak or boil it. As far as I'm aware you only have to cook it if you are feeding it whole, and apparently this is the most effective way to feed as it doesn't lose as many nutrients etc.

Not sure about the lupins.

I feed flaked lupins and flaked barley. Neither needs to be soaked but I damp the whole feed down with mollasses water.

To my understanding, lupins need to be soaked when whole due to them swelling poor digestability and feed conversion whilst barley wheat and oats need to be soaked to release the starch and sugars, hence the reason you need to drain the water before feeding if it is a hot horse.

Price wise, I find whole lupins best but it is more fiddley and labour intensive.
