I would at least feed them dampened to reduce dust. Even just add some warm to hot water to the grain before feeding. Soaked grains tend to be slightly more digestible.

They don't need to be fed soaked, however we had the pacers on crushed lupins for a while and 4 choked on them and cost an absolute fortune at the vets so I don't feed the crush ones dry anymore. Have gone back to soaked whole lupins and never had a problem since.

i used to soak my crushed grain as well. Takes less time to swell than whole grain and they get more out of the grain. Never had a problem with them choking on crushed lupins... although I never feed without at least wetting the feed down to reduce dust and stop the picky ones pushing all the minerals to the bottom of the bucket.

My boy used to LOVE soaked crushed barley and oats... they go all porridgey

Wink

I personally don't like crushed grain as I find it too dusty. Soaking or boiling the whole grain can be a pain but I prefer it but each to their own.

I feed mirconized Lupins & Barley, not dusty and my horse seems to love them. I also dampen his feed so the chaff doesnt blow around. I used to feed crushed lupins and never had a problem.

seems that once you crack throught the hard outer shell the inner content swells quite quickly.

To my understanding, lupins need to be soaked when whole due to them swelling poor digestability and feed conversion whilst barley wheat and oats need to be soaked to release the starch and sugars, hence the reason you need to drain the water before feeding if it is a hot horse.

Price wise, I find whole lupins best but it is more fiddley and labour intensive.
just an add'y to this..and not having a go at you bucking mad ...I've found that Crushed or rolled LUPINS still swell after adding water..I'd hate to think...what happens in your horses stomach after eating a dry feed...and then going..{like they do}...and having a drink

cheers
