help/ideas wanted feed for a a hot horse needing condition
hi,
ok well my big boy is a 16.2hh oldenburg with a big opion and character.
we where feeding him
livamol - 220g
coolmax- 4kg
rough cutt oaten chaff - 2x the 2l scoops
lucerne- 1x 2l scoop
and he was either out on 400 acres of grass with the cows or locked up in about 1.5acres getting 1/2 a square bale morning and night with 2-3 horses (it did have some grazing though limited)
he was extremley fat when he came to us so the above is what he was placed on after loosing some weight .
Not knowing he was hot headed.
We decided that it wasn't really giving him enough energy to go one day eventing etc he just seemed to run out of steam even though being fit ...
so we changed from the coolmax to liberty
every thing else the same as above
but with
liberty - 3kg
but with that he was okay
we added a bit of muslie about half a 2l scoop and it was ok until we took him out to a few ode's he got extremly heated up so we took him off this food and back to the coolmax and he seems ok now but he needs to put a bit more weight on but nothing heating at all !!
so we have thought maybe nutri rice allrounder would put condition on with ot heating him up at all and the cool max for energy but i was thinking about it and they are both complete feeds so i was wondering what people would suggest ...
but i dont want to feed pollard, bran or barley.
barley we tried for the weight before the liberty and it did not suit well we love barley and use it for all others that we are fattening up but he got heated up on it so.....
okay through some ideas at me im all open .....
oh before we got him he was on
1 biscuit of hay morning and night
oaten rough cutt chaff
lucerne chaff
1/2 scoop of hygain show torque
1/2 scoop of pegasus coolmax
but he was like an elephant
so.......
wow thats really long sorry

(psst it's 'rough cut' chaff)
Um I would just look to see if your horse is getting the vitamins and minerals it needs, especially the B group, and also magnesium. Even complete feeds do not give everything perfect especially for a big horse, and deficiencies can make them go troppo.
Try the equilize program, which you can download online as a demo for free.

I have a T/B mare who gets as "hot as hell" on livermol. Not sure if that helps but just thought I would mention it. She is great on oats ( I know that is strange) and they keep her really fat. Crazy bloody horses!

I'd probabley just try bulking up his hay before anything else. Roughage is the best thing and I find that if any of mine drop off they soon put it back on if I up the quantity of hay.

My hot gelding gets both chaffs, bran, coolmax, microbarley, a mix of supplements and 2 cups of livamol a day. He is fine on it. If he needs more weight (like he does at the moment) I just increase his overall feed.

It would more than likely be the muesli that hots him up, it tends to be a sweet, high energy food, so probably not the best idea to feed him that. You say he hots up on barley? Coolmax is generally made up of around 1/3 barley, but if he seems ok on that then thats fine. Obviously with being a big horse he is requiring 4kg a day, but if he is managing that fine then it shouldnt be a problem. They do need a LOT of roughage. ie good hay, these big horses. Also the addition of a source of fat will help, whether oil, rice bran, sunflower seeds(but just be cautious of these as they apparently can affect some horses). He was fat on the showtorque because its very high in protein and fat. Its not a bad feed actually, if he doesnt hot up on it it could be worth a go.
As an estimate(because i dont know his actual workload) I would be feeding, this; (twice a day)
1 scoop oaten chaff
3 scoops lucerne chaff
2kg coolmax
Either 500g rice bran (ie equijewel) or 1 cup veg oil. Plus half cup on sunflower seeds.
2 biscuits hay. I would possibly be giving 1 or 2 of these biscuits per day as good lucerne hay.

What about Speedibeet? It puts on weight but does not hot them up at all. I know it is just bulk and the vits will have to be looked at as well.

If he has dropped weight, and you have increased his feed by that much,
Then I would look into the possibility of worms/sand/ulcers/vit-min deficiency... Is he still well rugged?
