PSO he is definately well rugged!!! they all just got a drench and i am pretty sure they are due for a worm/just been wormed.

i personally dont think he was that bad when i last saw him... but then they went away to the olympics and he was in the care of andrew... and havent seen him since - until tomorrow haha.

ummmmmmm he NEEDS to be very calm and collected at solid gold because he will be in the indoor with me.. and i kind of need him calm haha

sweetbulk is a good one...haven't heard of a horse getting hot on it but it may happen...my horse was hot 4 a while there with the new spring shoots, i took him off liberty and put him on coolmax and for the first time eva someone said my horse is getting skinny!!!! maybe they're just use to him being fat as anything!!! my horse was like a 5 year old kid on red bull and he's a lazy horse!!! but he's easy to keep on weight....there are alot of things u can use to fatten ur horse but not getting hot is another, i'll ask moonlight coz her tb is a bit harder to keep weight on and c wat she suggests...her horse is quiet as and she's fattening him up...good luck

ok thanx guys

PSO as CD said he is definatley well rugged

eg

bib, sheet combo, wool, skye park blue synthetic with neck rug and when needed a lined canvas rug and neck rug .... and he is perfect in all that ..

umm i think he is due for worming. they where all drenched last month.

CLUBIGNITE... he is already getting oil-

he gets over 4 bicuits a day of meadow hay ...should I feed him more ? i just dont think he will eat more they allready leave some as it is

he got hot when we where feeding him whole soaked barley but is ok on the coolmax so....

and
we chose to try the nutri rice because it is meant to be a cool feed. I have been told that equijewel can tend to hea some horses up so have stayed away from that ....

oh by the way he is 17 and is worked atleast 3 days a week during winter but more now that it s still light when i get home from school so about 4 + times a week ...

thanks guys

any body know use speedi beet I know some vody that does and she says it is good but just wondering what you guys think ?

sounds like is on a very good diet,i used to use coolmax but it sent my mare loopy so changed back to liberty and she is fine,a very good weight builder is equi jewel, liberty, cooked whole barley,my mare also gets cooked barley and she is fine but not all horses are the same.with so many feed products on the market it very confusing stick with what works best maybe up your liberty or feed equi jewel and up your hay and chaff

Exclamation

If you want to reduce fizzy behaviour, cut out all grain products.

Feed low GI, high fat or fibre products like lupins, copra, Equi-Jewel, ricebran, black sunnies, Coprice M, Speedi-Beet, Liberty, vegie oil and lucerne.

The micronised feeds are very high GI so perhaps avoid them for now. Only use one complete feed if you do use them. Dont mix and match them please!

Feed him heaps more hay. A horse his size can consume 1 bale per day if you let him!!

Hay is the best weight gain feed to use first! Then supplement with lucerne if hay is not sufficient, and then add a balanced hardfeed with 1-2 energy sources and a mineral supp.

Hope that helps!

this might sound silly but has the silliness just started cause all our horses go throught the spring nuttiness at this time of year where for no reason they just act funny its annoying and distracting but they calm back down around october

I went though a period of coolmax etc I found that they heated my horse up as well as giving her this narky attitude. I stay clear of all pellets these days because of that. (It was not the heating up i couldn't handle it was nasty mares I didn't like especially when I knew they were so sweet - this was also over a period of 4 months or so)

Anyway I put them all back on oats and rice bran. It put wt on my t/b and turned her into a nice horse again. I was please I finally found something that worked. However I have been told to be careful about how much rice bran you feed as it can heat horses up saying that I feed 2 kg a day to my t/b.(the all get vit/mins and are rugged ) She is back to being a pleasant horse to be around and also nice forward moving ride.

You haven't said how old he is so I'm just wondering if teeth could be an issue as well as the fact that he needs worming. Once we did that with our boy it didn't take long for him to put on condition and he has maintained that ever since and we have even had to cut back on the hard feed as he was getting too fat lol. Ours boy is a 17yr old tb and although we haven't had any real issue's with him heating up on stuff he is also not in the kind of work that you probably have your boy in so wouldn't need that kind of feeding up. But I have heard that rice bran and lupins are very good to add weight on and because of his age we found that gumnuts were very helpfull also.

On the hay issue I have always fed qood quality hay so thats not an issue but like some people have mentioned some horses including my own won't eat all the hay you give them. If I give more the waste becomes more!!!
I would happily put more hay in their yards if they would eat it. So giving ad lib hay isnt always the solution.

I agree with Caroline when mine need weight put on out comes the copra, speedi beat, lupins and rice bran. Not all at once mind you
