deters fly's, works rea;lly well, i only used it at first to stop the fly's from buzzing around her feed bin in summer(soak a tbs of the garlic granuals in water i used to wet her feed, mix it all up and feed) and the fly's hate it but i found she wasn't getting botherd by the fly's cos the garlic in her sweat or sumthing. really good to sprinkle on the floor of the stable too as once it's wet the fly's wont go near it :P

be careful because a build up of garlic in their system can make a horse very sick!

Garlic is used to help control worms. Although I did speak with an equine naturopath who said that the safety of garlic for horses wasn't yet determined and you would need to feed fairly large quantities for worm control

Have to say i dont think garlic is really necessary. It's only something added to the feed in hopes its doing some good in my opinion.
I have'nt heard of someone going "my horse looks great/performs great since I added garlic".
If you don't mind adding it then go ahead. But its one less additive to buy and a chance to save $ !
