LOL thats funny... no he just testing they have seperated him now they all run out on a huge property so he is now locked up in a small paddock with another young colt there. dumby mare that sounds all to hard for alot of money involved setting it up i am worried that if he is my performance horse he may get kicked or hurt during the process of serving a mare you can put hobbles on mares cant you? when you do serve them does the mares have to stay with the stallion in a paddock for a while or just do the deed and go?

Personally if the property doesn't have a house and someone living on it then I wouldn't put a colt / stallion there.

Hand serving is a safe way of you stallion serving a mare. Firstly mare and stallion are to be teased, this is best done with a very strong teasing board/fence between them. Then the mare is being held, usually against a padded breeding bar, and a stallion handler walks the stallion to the mare and he mounts her does the deed - he may need help finding the right spot lol. It is all over quite quickly really. The stallion is then walked away to the teasing yard and mare is generally walked around a bit to prevent her pushing most of the semen out and then I always bring them back together for another serve. 15 days later I will have the mare preg tested. Sometimes a mare needs hobbling but most are pretty good about it all. Stallion can also wear little sock thingys over his feet particularly if he shod.

Paddock serving has risks but Frits seems to handle it all ok. I usually leave them together for 48 hours.

You can help me with my riding and I can help you with your stallions.

I have been looking at stallions and there is a million to one ways to do it. Breakaway stud only does AI frozen and chilled Angela is very helpful just send her an email. Just rememeber AI can be costly.

I found that most people liked to do live coverage or hand serve and this can be done a number of ways as well.

I have visited a fair few stallions, there where several set ups. One thing I did notice very few were in electric fencing and were all very well behaved. I can explain the different set ups (well I can but I would run out of words and go on forever). Ring up breeders ask them to show there set up I am sure most of them are more then wiling to chat to you. My mare is going to a very unusal set up but I like it as it is set up for the safety my mare, stallion and handler. As a mare owner I do not want my mare running with a stallion with no supervision or at all really.

Also showing is not a must very few breeders are actually attend 'breed shows' (I can say none of the horses I saw were in breed shows they are very much preformance horses) so your show jumping dreams are a great idea.

DON't breed crap just because a horse has a uterus does not mean it should be used be selective quality rather then quanity. Just cos a stallion has a dick does not mean it should be used either so it goes both ways.

I also like the fact that some breeders didn't want to breed unwanted foals. So make sure you find out the purpose of breeding the horse. We have enough unwanted horses as is. Normally the I'm going to sell it puts people off breeding.

Get a great vet. Things go wrong best to know your vet very well, make sure he is on call 24/7 in breeding season. Hook up with someone who is breeding this season get some great experiance.

Good luck with it all

I don't live on my farm where Frits is kept. I have not had any trouble at all. I guess it depends on circumstances and personal choice. Ideally I would love to live on same property as horses and this will happen once the farm sells - as it was bought as an investment and only temporary

thanks witchery, i actually dont want to breed i want to offer the service yeh... i can do that cant i? i actually am actaully starting to offer my services for educating owners horses so i would have a variety on the property but my only horse would be this guy. thats alright yeh?

i like the idea of the whole not paddocking together just return in a number of days to make sure it works, but what if it doesnt work do i still charge or not? generally if it is the mares lack lack of capability of being able to be pregnant thats not my fault but i still made the effort of sevring and all that that is my time and my stallions effort...

thats what the 'handeling fee' is if you look at most stallion adds it has 'fee + $X non refundable handleing fee, or Stud fee $x includes non refundable handing fee. etc so you get paid for your efforts
