Happypaint, my grandfather also went to Egypt in the war, I don't know who he was with though............. maybe they were together at some stage. Really makes you think doesn't it.
He also came home injured and went back ummmmmm as a cook I think.
I wonder how I find this stuff out now. He died when I was a child (about 35 years ago roughly). He was awarded a medal, which he never collected as he didn't want to remember. He was always very closed with information about himself and the war etc. I'd love to find out more though.

P.S sorry this wasn't about Walers, I was just so excited about the Egypt thing.

Just as a matter of interest, all the Waler mares in the above pics from Marianne were obtained as "wild, feral horses - Brumbies". They were regarded as useless, beyond their use by date, had run unmanaged for generations and now only good for the meat trade - which is where they were destined. Yet they had survived on "desert edge" cattle stations since the days when they were bred from the best of blood, had links back to the old Waler horses without the influence of "modern" horses. They are as Australian as the ANZACS, with qualities to match, and deserve preserving.

Shenalar,
You can probably get a lot of info. from the Aust War Memorial site - provided you have his name then that is enough to start with.
Best of Luck

Thanks for that Dreamer. I really must pursue it. My dad died in February, so that was the last link to my grandpa. There is no-one left alive to ask now....... why is it we leave it too late? So sad.
