It sounds like he is rushing just before the jump - perhaps getting a bit excited etc, or you may be tensing up as it is a higher jump then usual.

Either way, I'd try laying out some poles before the jump to set out his stride.
And a few lessons with an experienced instructor would help sort out the best way to go.
Also make sure you're not coming forward too early before the jump.
