Shioban it does depend on what breed you are going to show aswell if thats what its for.
You would never show a w/b stallion/colt or even a mare with just a chain and a headcoller anyway unlike I belive in western.
Some of these stallions (and mares) are huge and get even "bigger" at shows and a chain just isnt sufficiant to be 100% safe for everyone.
As someone said and I had forgotten to put, a chain on baby (under 3 or 4) under the chin can be quite harsh for them due to teeth coming through. A small valconite/rubber bit would probably be a better soloution on any young animal not just a stallion.Mares can be strong too!However again it does depend on what you are showing and I can only really speak for W/B's and Weslh Cobs as that is all I have ever owned really.!
I personally have always been over cautious rather than under and have never taken any horses good nature and manners for granted.I would rather 'over bit' as it were than have any sort of accident happen or injury to myself,my horse and even more importantly anyone else!!
