My OTTTB mare has lost a lot of muscle during her few weeks spell.
Lost in very noticabley in her neck and rump.
What suggestions/work plans/routines do people suggest to help her build it back up again. She could also do with some more on her topline...

    thanks in adavance!!!

Topline takes time and more time (and a bit more!!) to build up, at least 6-12 months for any real changes.

Deep and round work, riding into a positive contact, using her quarters and bringing her hocks under her (using herself properly) will help her gain topline. Lunging work is useful too , if worked in a Pessoa for example to make her work in a useful manner. Trotting, trotting and more trotting for topline and bum! Varied work on circles, no smaller than 20m until she is fit enough, including serpentines etc will help with bend and flexion, and trotting poles are useful also, introduced later on.

Hill work and riding out on varied terrain is also not to be overlooked, can go a long way in fittening regimes. Don't forget to get her saddle re-fitted to suit her changing shape and get regular chiro and/or bowen appointments to maximise her comfort and progress :) .

With saying all of the above, it depends how long she is OTT. If she is educated and just lost muscle from a spell, then that is fine, if she is just OT recently then you would need to begin very differently, as she would not be educated sufficiently to be worked in this manner, or given any great deal of circle work/deep and round work. In that instance I would be focusing quite differently.

Don't you love how it takes months and months to build it - and only a few weeks for it all to disappear.

    Good point Danica!

Take it slow and easy, dont rush it or over do it or you will end up pulling her muscles and doing damage, lunging, riding (bush walking, beach riding etc) and long and low, lots of food and lots of rest afterwards! I like to have a four day plan, ride or work your horse for four days and then four days off, this will enable her to come back into work slowly and effective enough to build muscle.

Muscle works well if you feed it, work and then rest it!
