    How do you measure your horse's mouth for "correct" bit size?

    pony = 4.5in
    cob = 5 in
    full 5.5 in

    is that right?

    my mare fits pony and cob size bridles so just wanting to know what would be her correct bit size?

    pso thanks for the interesting link.
    I have downloaded the bit measurer and can put it together, but as I am a bit of a dummy cannot work out how to use it.

    you do have to measure the horse/pony as our 15.2 hh gelding takes the same size bit as our 12.2 hh pony

    You have it assembled- right?
    see the two arrows at the thin end?
    put these arrows at the sides of mouth where the bit would sit, and the correct size will be shown in the window at the bottom;)

    ...or, even easier (and more permanent!!) you can buy a BitFit Bit Measure for $30 from my website. In stock now, ready to post to you!

    Every horse is different, and a large number of people are using bits that are too big! The shops selling Pony, Cob and Horse bits are not helping, as you might get a thoroughbred in a 4.75", a WB in a 6", a pony in a 5.25"- the size of the horse does not dictate his bit size.

    Check out a YouTube of how to use the BitFit here: YouTube - Bit Fit
    and our website: Bella Equestrian - Whips & Rider Accessories

    Hope this helps!

    You know, you can just get a smooth piece of wood or plastic (or anything straight and smooth), put it in the horse's mouth, and mark the ends. And it's free.
