I don't think chestnut is a rare colour for standardbreds, bay seems to be much, much more common because its a dominant colour gene, that's what I read anyway:D

I only know of three chestnut standys, two being owned by a stockie, and one previously owned by a stockie..
I think chestnut is a lot less common in stb than it is in TB, for one thing..
There are a lot of brown and bay though, as RC said :)

I've got 3 chestnut standies. One with a big white blaze and flaxen mane and tail - even has white patches under his belly, one with a white star and snip and a liver chestnut colt foal with a big white star.

They do seem to be getting rarer. I dont think there were any in the yearling sales this year.

AND THEN, even rarer are the pinto coloured standies!

I remember a trainer/breeder had a whole lot of them. I 'think' he had a pinto stallion too

Gaia has a pinto Stb and knows a lot about them :) I had a couple of chestnut Stb's, they are around but just not as common as bay and brown. Grey used to be very rare but with Jet Laag being imported they are now a lot more common.

Ooh...their is a lovely roan standie in Narrogin.

Chestnut is actually the recesive colour not the dominant one.

A bay/brown horse can carry chestnut and not show it.
    A chestnut only carries chestnut
All other things like sabino/grey/dilutions/pinto&paint markings excluded

There's a couple roans that train at byford and guy I use to work for had a white stb. No joke, he was pure white, no grey bits. Though he was 9
